Soft Inscriptions: corpuri, peisaje, vise

Soft Inscriptions: bodies, landscapes, dreams

Soft Inscriptions is an immersion into an artistic universe where bodily memory and inner landscapes are transformed into images and materials that touch the skin - not only on the surface, but on a deeper level.

Codruța Cernea's works explore human fragility, insomnia, the relationship with motherhood, exile, adaptation, and nostalgia - themes that gain new dimension in contact with the fine texture of Ami Amalia’s creations. The powerful encounter between image and fiber lies in how these two worlds translate into one another, mutually infusing corporeality and memory: art becomes wearable, and objects become subtle extensions of deeply personal experiences.

In a city often too harsh, this collaboration opens up a temporary island—a phantom island where fragments of dreams, skin, and memory meet. An invitation not just to wear an object, but to inhabit a mood. To wrap in a story.

MELANCHOLIA OF LIVING IN THE AFTERNOON OF TIME

Sector 1 Gallery, Bucharest

08.05 - 21.06.2025

Artists: Codruța Cernea, Roberta Curcă, Dragoș Bădiță, Andrei Nuțu

With the thoughtful care and guidance of Norbert Filep.

CC: I revisited Seasons. It feels like a bridge between the past and the present/future. There are references to the history of painting, filtered through this new tool with its glitches. It captures the moment well — the moment we’re living through now. I was wondering why you started with Winter? Was there a specific reason?
DB: Maybe because that's how the year begins in our culture. It allowed for the richest transitions — from thaw and the blossoming of life at the start, to stillness and void at the end. It felt like the most natural choice. Winter is closest, symbolically, to nothingness, so it made sense to place it at both ends.
(July 4, 2024)

The exhibition starts from the premise that there are shared elements in the way we interpret the world and the present moment, and that this is reflected in our works — resulting in a natural synergy between them. We had several meetings in each other's studios, where we presented our works, discussed them, and looked for points of intersection. The title, which we all agreed upon, is inspired by George Williamson’s phrase “melancholy of living in the afternoon of time,” which we came across in Damien Rudd’s book Sad Topographies.

A Therapeutic Journey, the latest title by philosopher and essayist Alain de Botton, founder of The School of Life, is now available on Vellant.ro and in bookstores.

"This book describes the course of a journey – from downfall and collapse to convalescence and recovery. It aims to be both a practical guide and a source of consolation and companionship during what might be some of our loneliest and most distressing moments."
— Alain de Botton

TOUCH NATURE

LENTOS MUSEUM, Linz, Austria

24.01 to 18.05.25

Curator and exhibition concept: Sabine Fellner

Project assistance: Laurenz Fellner

Exhibition design: wienerhalle

The multimedia exhibition ”Touch Nature” showcases international artists and their takes on the devastating political, economic, ecological and humanitarian consequences of the Anthropocene. It becomes quite clear in the process that, in addition to documenting grievances and formulating strategies of resistance, these artists also provide blueprints for utopias.

The economic exploitation of huge tracts of land, rising levels of soil sealing and the global effects of consumerism are addressed alongside the capitalist manipulation of waste. A series of cooperative ventures, some of which are interdisciplinary in character, results in art projects that deal with the global food situation, the spread of epidemics and the consequences of colonialism, aiming at a change of perspective. The exhibition develops encouraging visions of a new relationship between humanity and nature and of an approach to our environment marked by mindfulness and respect.

The exhibition is based on a series of exhibitions of the same name that were shown in twelve of Austria’s Forums of Culture in Europe and the United States between 2021 and 2024. This allowed Austrian artists to enter into a creative dialogue with artists of the host countries. The show at the Lentos presents a summary of this series of exhibitions and supplements it with international works of art. Its roughly 100 artists present a multinational overview of the current engagement with the climate crisis and the destruction of our environment. It is in the spirit of Alexander von Humboldt, a pioneer of ecological thinking, who famously wrote to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1810: “Nature must be felt.”
